Two doctors and a nurse from Nair Hospital were suspended by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for alleged negligence in treating four persons including a four-month-old boy injured with severe burns in a cylinder blast, causing in Worli on Monday. All four victims were admitted to Nair hospital, where the infant, Mangesh Puri, died late Tuesday. Later, a video clip surfaced on social media showing negligence in attending to the injured.
To investigate the matter, the civic administration has appointed an external committee of four doctors under Dr Ajay Chandanwale, Joint Director of Directorate of Medical Education and Research including a doctor from JJ hospital and two specialized doctors in burn cases from private hospitals.
On Friday, Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani (Health) informed the BMC Standing Committee that the doctor, the MBBS student and the nurse had been suspended for alleged negligence based on a preliminary internal inquiry with the help of CCTV camera footage. He also stated that the external committee will submit its report by next week and that no doctors from the corporation have been included in the committee to ensure fair inquiry and suggested that counselling sessions for all hospital staffers shall be held to avoid such incidents.
